In the killing game ofDanganronpa: Trigger Happy Havoc, making friends is the last thing on certain characters' minds. Protagonist Makoto Naegi, however, believes that it’s important to maintain bonds and trust. To that end, the player can build bonds between Makoto and his classmates, perhaps even forming deep friendships. These bonds can actually be important in-game, as they unlock abilities that players can employ during class trials.

to connect with his classmates and gain access to new skills, Makoto must not only spend time with them, but show some generosity through gifts. Each student has their own likes and dislikes, and since time together is limited in the killing game, there’s little room for trial and error. Here’s a guide to obtaining and giving gifts in the firstDanganronpagame.

Updated June 25, 2025, by Demaris Oxman:TheDanganronpagames are all about the mystery that the characters find themselves in. As such, some players tend to overlook the social aspect of the games, and don’t take advantage of Free Time. However, this is a mistake. By getting to know his classmates better, Makoto opens up new skills that can help him in the class trials, quite literally saving his life. Some of these skills are game-breaking, and can only be unlocked by giving presents to the right people.

There are over a hundred items that Makoto can collect; however, not all of them are giftable. To help players sort out their inventory, this guide has been updated to provide information on these items, so that Makoto has a clear idea of what he can gift and what he cannot.

How To Obtain Gifts

The player can obtain items to gift to their fellow studentsat theMonoMono Machinein the School Store.By putting in a Monocoin, players can obtain one item. The machine starts off with a 0% repeat chance; however, each time the player receives a new item, the chance of them getting an item they have received before increases. The player can put in additional Monocoins to lower the repeat chance; however, this does NOT increase the number of items they will receive. Makoto will only receive one item each time he pulls the lever.

Bear in mind that it’s not necessarily a negative thing to receive an item that Makoto has received before, as many students like the same gifts. In particular, there are two gifts which are Liked by all students in the school, and are thus among the best to obtain. These are theHope’s Peak Ringand theFunplane.

Non-Giftable Items

Over the course of the game, players will find themselves coming into possession of items that, although they are part of the gift inventory, cannot be given as gifts to Makoto’s classmates. If the player tries to do so, they will get a notification telling them that their attempted gift is a “key item” and cannot be given away.

The first two non-giftable items unlock bonus scenes.Item 91, A Man’s Fantasy, has a chance to appear in the MonoMono Machine during Chapter 2. If Makoto has it in his inventory during Chapter 3, they’ll get to see a steamy bathhouse scene.Item 92, Escape Button, has a chance to drop from the MonoMono machine after the player has completed Chapter 6. This unlocks an alternate ending in the main menu.

At the end of each chapter, Makoto will obtain an item that serves as a memento of that chapter’s events, and often of the characters who died in that chapter. These items, numbered93-100,cannot be gifted to NPCs. Similarly, after completing a classmate’s report card, Makoto will receive a (somewhat dubious) token of their friendship. These items, numbered101-114,cannot be given as gifts either.

Gift Preferences & Unlockable Skills

Each of Makoto’s classmates has a list of Loved gifts, and a list of Liked gifts. Following each character’s first Free Time Event (FTE), the player mustpresent the character with a Liked or Loved gifteach time they choose to spend some time with that person, in order to initiate the next Free Time Event and fill out the following page in that character’s Report Card.

Below, players can find a full list of each character’s Loved gifts. As the lists of Liked gifts are often much longer, a few are listed here, along with links to the Danganronpa wiki where players can find a full, detailed breakdown.

toko’s introduction

Aoi Asahina

The cheerful, friendly Ultimate Swimming Pro will gladly take a wide variety of gifts. Of course, items relating to her talent make the top of Hina’s list, but she also seems to appreciate gifts that appeal to her girly side.

Hina’s Skills:

Junko Enoshima

Junko’s list of gifts is an interesting mix. Some of her preferred items seem to fit her persona as the Ultimate Fashionista; however, others, like the God of War charm, hint at the character’s true identity.

Junko’s Skills:

Chihiro Fujisaki

Sweet, adorable Chihiro’s list of Liked gifts is one of the longest of all theTrigger Happy Havoccharacters; thus, the Ultimate Programmer is relatively easy to befriend. They like gadgets and gizmos, and lots of other trinkets.

Chihiro’s Skills:

Toko Fukawa

The Ultimate Writing Prodigy, Toko seems to appreciate gifts relating to her talent. Additionally, she likes items with an air of romance, which fits her preferred genre.

Toko’s Skills:

Genocide Jack

Toko’s alternate personalityactually has a few preferred gifts in common with Toko. However, given her different nature, others are definitely items that Toko would decline.

Jack’s Skills:

Yasuhiro Hagakure

The Ultimate Clairvoyant likes snacks and food items, but in keeping with his personality, the best way to win him over is with strange trinkets and curiosities, especially ones that are supposedly mystical.

Hiro’s Skills:

Kiyotaka Ishimaru

Taka, the Ultimate Moral Compass, has fairly short lists of Loves and Likes, but they cover a wide range of items — perhaps because he has few interests outside of school. Makoto can take the opportunity to introduce him to some fun.

Taka’s Skills:

Kyoko Kirigiri

The Ultimate Detective appears to have refined tastes, as she prefers high-end, elegant gifts. However, she also appears to like gadgets and gimmicks that could aid her in her profession, as seen on her Liked list.

Kyoko’s Skills:

Leon Kuwata

Leon’s gifts don’t appear to follow much of a theme; however, it’s worth noting that none of them are baseball-related. It’s not surprising, considering the Ultimate Baseball Star doesn’t really consider his talent anything special.

Leon’s Skills:

Celestia Ludenberg

The Queen of Lies likes to project elegance and refinement, and her preferred gifts reflect that. They appeal to her gothic lolita aesthetic, and her attempt to give off an air of mystery.

Celeste’s Skills:

Sayaka Maizono

Fitting with her image, Sayaka seems to like cute and girly things. Though players don’t get much time with the Ultimate Pop Sensation in the main story mode, it’s worth offering her one or two of these gifts. In the bonus mode, players can spend a bit more time with her, learning more about her character — if they win her over with presents, that is.

Sayaka’s Skills:

Mondo Owada

Mondo, as one might expect, likes gifts that cater to his tough-guy image. There are some surprises on his lists though, hinting at a softer side.

Mondo’s Skills:

Sakura Ogami

Unsurprisingly, the Ultimate Martial Artist appreciates athletic-themed gifts. But despite appearances, Sakura has a romantic, feminine side, and several of her preferred gifts reflect this.

Sakura’s Skills:

Byakuya Togami

Surprisingly, givenhow discerning and selectivehe is, Byakuya has one of the longest list of Loved gifts of all the characters in the first game. It seems he’s a collector of curiosities.

Byakuya’s Skills:

Hifumi Yamada

The Ultimate Fanfic Creator seems rather choosy, as his preferred gift lists are fairly short. However, he won’t turn down junk food, or memorabilia from his favorite content.
