Previously, Infinity Ward and Activision advertised the popular Gunfight Tournaments mode for theCall of Duty: Modern Warfaremid-season update. Unfortunately, the mid-season update came with no Gunfight Tournaments, and no explanation as to why the mode was seemingly delayed. However, Gunfight Tournaments is now coming back toCall of Duty: Modern Warfare, with the mode making its triumphant return this week.

Gunfight Tournamentsis expected to return toCall of Duty: Modern Warfareas part of the Tuesday, July 7 update. For the uninitiated, Gunfight Tournaments is a special mode where players have to win four matches in a row. Those that manage to complete win a Gunfight Tournament can unlock bonus XP and other unique rewards, with the grand prize this time around being a new assault rifle blueprint. However, Infinity Ward has stopped short of revealing exactly what the new Gunfight Tournaments blueprint looks like.

Speaking of blueprints, Blueprint Gunfight will still be available in the playlists after the July 7 update.Blueprint Gunfightdecks players out with special custom weapons as they compete in the 2v2 battles, and could be a good way to practice for Gunfight Tournaments. Other Gunfight variants will not be added to the game this week, however.

Infinity Ward has experimented with some other versions of Gunfight sinceModern Warfarefirst launched last year. One of the more popular variants was the3v3 Gunfight mode, though there has also beenGunfight OSP, which was not nearly as well-received. Gunfight OSP replaced standard Gunfight for some time, but it changed up the flow of the gameplay significantly by having players loot for their equipment instead of starting everyone out with the same gear. Many felt this defeated the purpose of Gunfight, and so Infinity Ward didn’t take long to swap it out with standard Gunfight.

Looking ahead, it will be interesting to see how the Gunfight concept evolves in theCall of Dutyfranchise, both insideModern Warfareand beyond.Call of Duty Mobilehas added its own version of Gunfight, though rumors indicate thatCall of Duty 2020won’t have Gunfight. Considering how popular the mode is, it’s a bit surprising that it will supposedly be skipping the new game, but fans can expect it to make a comeback at some point down the line.

Call of Duty: Modern Warfareis out now for PC, PS4, and Xbox One.
