Game updates can see developers touching up parts of games players may not immediately think of, such as cosmetics, and Infinity Ward did just this in its latest update toCall of Duty: Modern Warfare 2’s Polyatomic camo. Players aren’t without choices of camos inside the game, whether it be purchasing camos such as the returningDamascus camoor any of the camos available to unlock from the game’s challenges. However, Infinity Ward has given a makeover to one of the game’s oldest camos, and it seems some members of the community are not happy with the change.

The Polyatomic camo was among the first set of camos players could unlock from challenge completions afterCall of Duty: Modern Warfare 2’s release in October 2022. As one of the first two mastery camos available to unlock, alongside the Orion camo, it meant the grind to unlock it was among the longest in the game. Players first needed to complete the gold and platinum weapon challenges on all 51 launch weapons to unlock Polyatomic weapon challenges, which finally unlocks the camo.

Originally, thePolyatomic camoturned players' weapons dark purple along with an almost crystalline design covering the weapon from stock to barrel. The latest update changed this, as Reddit user Lorenso0 points out in a thread on theModern Warfare 2subreddit, which makes the previously stock camo into an animated camo. It also saw the previously dark purple color scheme made significantly brighter, now appearing to be more of a flat purple.

The change appeared to catch many users by surprise as Infinity Ward had given no indication it was going to make any changes to the Polyatomic camo. Responses to the camo in Lorenso0’s thread were largely negative, with most of the criticism aimed at how much brighter the camo was now compared to before the update. Some users also took the chance to swipe at themonetization model employed by Activisionand Infinity Ward, joking that the change was a way to drive players to buy more camos fromModern Warfare 2’s cosmetic shop.

Some players could argue, though, the brighter color scheme could have been a side effect of the animation change and the larger update it was part of. As of this writing, the camo is not covering weapon attachments as it had been previously, with some users in Lorenso0’s thread suggesting it could be a bug. In either case, it opens the door forInfinity Ward’s changesto be walked back if it was intentional and the negative feedback is more widespread.

Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2is currently available for PC, PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X/S.
