The game does a lot of things well, but its legacy has been rightfully tainted by an absurd amount of bugs that make it unplayable at times, especially for those who are using older PlayStation and Xbox consoles.

Underneath all these issues, the intensive RPG has a pretty good story, and it helps that it is set in a world where everyone’s body has been cybernetically augmented to some degree.There are plenty of movies out there thatCyberpunkfans would enjoybecause of the similar, settings, storytelling, and action, but those fans would probably like a few anime series or films for the same reasons.

10Ghost In The Shell

Cyberpunkmay not be one of2020’s best RPGs, but anyone who enjoyed it would love the originalGhost in the Shellanimated film.  In this world, technology has advanced to the point that humans can augment or completely replace their bodies with cybernetic parts.

The story follows a cyborg public-security agent named Motoko Kusanagi, who is trying to catch a mysterious hacker. To this day, the film receives praise for its score and visuals, but its narrative – which deals with philosophical themes about self-identity – is masterfully written.

If gamers enjoy story-heavy games likeCyberpunk, then they will love a series likeErgo Proxy. It may consist of just 23 episodes, butErgo Proxydoes a lot with the time it’s given. In the series, an ecological disaster has forced humanity to live in domed cities, where humans and androids live in peace.

The androids become infected by a virus which makes them self-aware, and chaos ensues shortly after. Inspector Re-L Mayer is tasked with finding the cause of the virus, and in doing so, she discovers a new species of humanoids called Proxies-who were secretly created to rebuild the Earth.

8Gunslinger Girl

Gunslinger Girlis a 13-episode series that focuses on a group of young cybernetic girls and their male handlers. At first glance, these girls appear to be harmless, but they are all in fact highly trained assassins who work for the Italian government.

The girls receive synthesized muscles and carbon fiber frames, which grant them enhanced strength and reflexes, as well as a higher pain threshold. They are all brainwashed and trained by their handlers, and their primary duty is to deal with a rebel faction that wants to bring independence to Northern Italy.

This world has recently gone through an extensive war, and quite a few Extended soldiers have turned to crime to survive. Juzo Inui is an Extended detective who takes cases involving other members of his kind, and his entire head is a giant, functional revolver.

Mardock Scrambleis an anime film trilogy which deals with some pretty mature themes, soCyberpunkfans should be captivated by them. The trilogy is set in Mardock City, and it focuses on Rune Balot, a young sex worker who is targeted by a notorious gambler who wants to get rid of her before she can testify against him.

Rune’s life is saved by a doctor who transforms her into a cyborg, and he does so by enacting the city’s life-preserving emergency ordinance. Rune is given an AI companion who takes the form of a mouse, and it trains her to use her new body.

Psycho-Passis set in a futuristic Japan where crime is nothing more than a mathematical equation, as a powerful bio-mechanical computer network uses criminal minds to measure the biometrics of other citizens to see how close they are to committing a crime.

A rookie inspector, Akane Tsunemori is paired with a latent criminal Enforcer named Shinya Kogamia, who helps to apprehend individuals whose Psycho-Pass score exceeds 100. LikeCyberpunk,this series does a good job of exploring what humans could be capable of.

When Ichise loses a fight and angers a promotor, he loses an arm and leg and is left for dead, but he is rescued by a scientist who gives him a pair of prosthetic limbs. Ichise then meets a girl who can see possible futures, and together they try to save their city which is on the brink of war.

Alita: Battle Angelwas released in early 2019, and it managed to make money at the box office despite a lackluster marketing campaign. The movie was based on theBattle Angel Alitamangawhich also spawned a 2-episode anime OVA.

Like the live-action movie, the OVA tells the story of a female cyborg named Alita who is saved by a cyberphysician. Alita has no memory of her past life, but she slowly regains pieces of her former self, all while working as a Hunter-Warrior-which is basically a cyberpunk bounty hunter.

Released in 1988,Akirais still considered to be one of the greatest sci-fi anime films ever made. The movie is set in a dystopian 2019 and focuses on the leader of a biker gang who watches as his best friend, Tetsuo, becomes a monster after gaining telekinetic powers from a motorcycle accident.

Tetsuo aspires to be better than his friend, and he believes that his newfound powers will do just that. Ultimately, this hubris leads to his downfall. These powers were created by the Neo-Japan government, but they nearly destroy the country which was already filled with corruption and civil unrest.
